Eye in the sky

I think the last time I was in Orlando, this giant London-style Ferris wheel was only some supports sticking up out of the ground. Well, it appears to be done, and it is either turning almost too slowly to notice, or not turning at all. Nonetheless, impressive. We looked it up, and it is just about 10% smaller than the London Eye, still plenty big.

Somebody made a very artful snowdog outside the Co-op. He’s got an expertly smudged face, an eager stance, and even a little rock poo.

He reminds me of Tintin’s dog Milou, who in English is known as Snowy, which has always sort of bothered me (and I’m not alone).

The découpage before the storm

This building, a Superfund site, sits a few blocks away from the house. It’s scheduled to come down over the summer, which will be an aesthetic relief. During the many years it’s stood empty it’s been a popular place for teenagers, homeless people, and others to explore. Keeping this particular window boarded up has been difficult.
But now, Mod Podge to the rescue! Inexplicable, but there it is.

Masque-ical mystery tour

Last night we hosted a murder mystery party. It’s something we’ve done a few times before, always a good way to tease a little theater out of people from whom you might not expect it. The pacing of this kit, which was all mingling and noshing, worked better than some others with a big elaborate meal.

Lee and Kim put in a ton of planning, and it all went off beautifully. We had a character named Gary played by a guy named Gary, an electrician played by an electrician, and I even got to play a sleazy, er, misunderstood, computer consultant.

The theme was a masked ball in the castle. Everyone had a motive to kill the victim, who after being stabbed in the bathroom had to spend the rest of the evening in an orange vest and a lighted marabou-trimmed halo: a fate worse than death?? And everyone had a few drinks, including, naturally, Bloody Mary shots.

I’m the man in gray (bonus points for Specials fans who know the next line of that song). And technically Gary was in gray while I was in pewter…

And then, mystery solved, it was all over… if anybody wants to come by this weekend, there’s leftovers!

Marching in Place

There were only a couple hundred women left in Brattleboro today, because all the rest were off marching in Boston, New York, and Washington DC.

But for those few who stayed to tend the home fires, not to worry… there was a place to say what needed saying.

Pahk yah cah neah the aht

For reasons that aren’t entirely clear to me, Brattleboro’s multi-level parking garage is one focus of an ongoing river-themed art installation.

Here’s the latest bit… combining a selfie opportunity with a poem about, well, more or less whatever you want it to be about.

Bye bye Sporty

The best days of The Sportsmen’s Lounge were behind it long before we got to town. So, no huge surprise to see a handwritten sign on the door saying they’re closed. They had some improbable flowers in the tiny dirt strip in the front, and neon signs from brands of beer I won’t drink and teams I don’t care about.

We only made it in one time, even though I was once told by a memorably alcoholic lady at another bar that the Friday seafood lunch was very much worth the trip.

Screen Shot

This is what happens when you put a dramatic silk flower arrangement on a high spot, leave the iPad on the counter, and mix in an unknowable combination of a curious cat and air currents.

The first thing we did was to make sure that duct tape was not a feasible solution.

The Apple Store wants a whole lot of money for a new screen, the local repair shop wants less but still hundreds. We can buy a replacement kit for under $30, so we’ll try that first.
