Looking SSW from Pt. Udall

At least one of the bronze posts that feature prominently in the Point Udall monument has been completely sawed through… this one has so far survived. Likely the thief’s battery went dead.

High season brings a crowd to Pt. Udall. Not shown are the two (two!) additional cars behind us.

The Eastern end of the Very Long Baseline Array. The other end is in Hawaii.
On the plaque near the gate, it says that they still store all the data on magnetic tape, and ship to the mainland every day. Really?

Bird Squadron this is Bird Leader. We are cleared for flight. Report!
Bird Leader this is Bird One. We would just as soon hang out here on the pier and let the wind whistle through our feathers. Some of the boys have adopted an aerodynamic low profile stance which they say will impress the tourists and confound our enemies.

Not a knocker, but almost

Our morning constitutional was interrupted by a 5-minute squall, but we stayed completely dry under the canopy of a convenient tree. And, no, I didn’t Photoshop that rainbow.

What do you call a bunch of cranes? A lift? A hoist? A cable, a cabal? Having never seen so many in one place it’s a question I never had to ask.
And of course, I don’t even know if they’re cranes… Maybe it’s an eyeful (Eiffel?) of ibis!
