Let’s taco bout it
Or
Hands off! That’s nacho cheese!
Or
Pollo boy oh boy!

At long last, Milagros Mexican restaurant opened on Memorial Day. Food delicious, kitchen still finding its rhythm in our two visits so far.

Assuming they get the kinks ironed out, it will be hard to keep us out of this place.

I donut know what to tell you…

Our area is suffering some long term economic challenges, so even the most mundane sights are tinged with nostalgia. Here, a Vernon police cruiser (which will be sold at auction later this year since without the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant they can’t afford a police force) slinks through for one last donut.

UPDATE 5/31: so today we actually drove through Vernon for what might have been the first time. A little too fast as it turned out. The nice Vernon policeman let me off with a warning.

Even if your minivan has lasted way past its normal shelf life, it’s okay to liven things up with a two-tone duct tape treatment.

Brooks House construction continues… Supposedly classes at the community college will start in the fall behind that green sheathing.

It’s ok to use camouflage duct tape if your Camry is too sexy for your repair budget.

Winners and Losers

Our local economy is small, but still complex.

The nearby nuclear plant will be shutting down this year, a victory for the anti-nuclear activists, and a clear economic loss for the area (neighboring town Vernon won’t have a police department next year, for example).

One winner I wouldn’t have thought of: the struggling local newspaper, who now is publishing big color job ads from the Idaho National Laboratory.

Vultures

We often see them soaring over the river, and they’re really quite graceful. But seeing them hanging out in a tree looking at you is a different, slightly creepy story.

Altogether there were about 15 of them… Apparently they’re quite social.
