Brattleboro Adventure – the Auckland Edition
In which we find ourselves in another part of the world

Congrats to the Snaz!!!!

New skirt from the cruise ship market, and a sandpaper vine, which looks like a wisteria but isn’t.

Brunch at Polly’s

During the winter, Frederiksted gets 1-2 cruise ships per week. A desultory market is set up to sell trinkets, the beach bars and restaurants and tour operators gear up for a good day, and longtimers like us alternately grumble about the tourists and welcome the infusion of cash into the local economy.
And again about 12:15, and in fact more or less through the night. And his friends and his rivals alike joined in. And then a dog barked.
Owing to a hotel reservation screwup that I’m pinning on Delta Vacations, we’re enjoying St. Croix the AirBNB way, in a nicely renovated apartment in a 200+ year old compound in downtown Frederiksted.
Our hosts moved here last year from Colorado and are in the process of turning the property into what seems like the perfect island mix. Their own home, three or four units to rent out short or long term, a smaller place upstairs for mom, and some modest rooms for caretakers and the inevitable freeloaders. And plenty of room for an unknowably large yammer of chihuahuas. It’s a big project, more than I think I would have energy for, but I certainly understand the impulse.
As the new day begins, the chickens seem to have taken a break, their song replaced by hymns from the Episcopal Church across the street. We’ll explore the town today, visit the dive shop, maybe hike through the rain forest to the tide pools. Rum is cheaper than coffee here, and it’s 77 degrees, which is 76 more than it is at home. All is right in at least this little part of the world.
* bonus points for getting the reference. I knew this was a thing, but I couldn’t remember what and I had to look it up.

Our AirBNB hosts Kathy and Randy took us to Turtles for make your own sushi night. Only happens once a month… 10 bucks all-you-can-eat. Way cool.

St. Croix

Adios Milagros
We did our part to keep the place open, but I guess it wasn’t enough. After only eight months in business, our nearby Mexican restaurant closed. Supposedly, it will be spending “more time with its family.”

The wheels on the bus…
are invisible because of the fucking snow.
There’s a lot of people trying to make it as musicians and I support all of them. But actually I don’t. I mean, you can’t buy everything.
But in this one case, I am putting my money where my mouth is. The Snaz is Brattleboro’s hottest teen indie rock band. Actually I think they’re a lot better than that, and they have this crazy chance to take their act on the road to the SXSW festival in Austin, after winning a New England-wide competition. And one of their moms works for my wife….
They have a focus I wish I’d had at that age: maybe they’ll make it. Even if they don’t stay together, since bands don’t stay together, they’re still really good really talented kids, and they should get to have this trip.
They’ve got a Kickstarter campaign underway and I just backed them and I hope you will too…

This is a wonderful story, and neat that it has been picked up nationally. It’s also one that makes me say “hmmm” … maybe I’m investing wrong. Dummerston is the next town over, and the hospital and library are both in Brattleboro. It’s the biggest gift either institution has ever received.
update 2/25/15: And I’m so sorry I missed “word-burning stove” and promise to do better in future. Just goes to show that big money can blind you to what’s important.
