It’s not a trip to Toronto anymore without posting a picture of the CN Tower …

A n afternoon walk past Morningside Cemetery showed the old black slate tombstones in a lovely light, although it washed out in the photo. I copied the epitaph from old Mr. Birge, presumably for whom Birge Street is named:

Think, gentle reader, of the fate of man
Nor live secure in health and spirits gay.
Think on the sudden change the awful span,
And live as if you thought to die to-day.

Fine advice.

Lee looked it up… Was this a quote or an original? Apparently an original. More important than that discovery was that someone has already transcribed lots if not all of the town’s epitaphs at http://brattleborohistory.com/cemeteries/epitaphs.html… Good stuff!

A man-sized bottle of gin, a mason jar full of simple syrup infused with basil (our first garden harvest of the season), and of course a bottle of sparkling water offscreen… summer is finally here.

Every Day is Wednesday

Last night, a Thursday, I joined Washington DC’s Every Day is Wednesday Hash House Harriers for their weekly run. It’s a popular hash, particularly among relatively new or non-hard-core hashers, always taking off near a Metro stop, and not going overboard with the hashing rituals. Last nights run was a white dress run, in honor of two of their members who are getting married soon. The bride is shown here, standing on the ground all the way at the right.

Being in the big city makes you realize just how big the big city can be… There were well over 100 people, and everyone said that was just a normal sized group. We were told to disperse by the cops once, while drinking a beer in an alley, and then visited again by cops who did not tell us to disperse at the end… Just enough excitement to make it worthwhile.

Deep in the heart

Nestled between the MSSC (manufacturing skill standards council) and the ICPF (international corrugated packaging foundation) on Alexandria’s King Street lies the Hard Times Cafe. Yes, they do have a vintage Rock-ola jukebox, and Frito pie, and Terlingua chili. And Shiner Bock on draft. And no matter how generous the calorie count on MapMyNarcissism, there’s no way tonight’s run “earned” my chili cheeseburger.

Acronymony

–the anger you feel when surrounded by organizations most easily identified by their initials. Especially prevalent in the Washington DC area.

And speaking of vast right wing conspiracies, here’s the sun rising on the George Washington Masonic National Monument.

Arriving in Alexandria last night, I took this multi-exposure HDR shot of the beautiful sunset over the Lockheed Martin building. I, a Federal contractor myself, was working my way up to some sort of commentary about the pernicious influence of the military-industrial complex.

But then this woman walked through the frame and changed everything. Now I’ve got no idea what the picture is about.

After a serious trimming last year, this redbud looks much better.

John Gorka concert at Next Stage Arts in Putney. He’s got a lot of clever lyrics, great guitar playing, and a lot of funny between-songs patter.

First outdoor bike ride of the year yesterday, in which we bagged a total of 7 covered bridges. I hope you can see the sign on this one. We did actually go faster than a walk at some points but overall we kept to our goal of making this a social ride rather than a competition.

When Brattleboro’s new eight bay Tesla charging station went in last year, we were the most rural of any spot on the nationwide supercharger network. I don’t know if that’s still true or not, but it is very cool to have them here. I have definitely seen more Teslas in town than I would expect simply from local owners.
