One night in Bangkok

Made for memories including a “laugh about it later” cab ride story (the Thai pronunciation of Radisson and Renaissance is deceptively similar), Tom Yum flavor ramen, and the sharp juxtaposition of only 3 hours sleep and an absolutely wonderful bed.

But the writing is beautiful…

One day in Bangkok gave a tour of the Grand Palace and more Tom Yum,

at the biggest mall ever,

and — as always — a reminder that the global 1% live awesome lives.

Lobby to table

This cool “aeroponic” garden helps feed the masses who pass in and out of the Orlando Convention Center. I kinda want one of these towers!!

In the belly of the beast

Surely Jonah felt some comfort inside the whale. There was air to breathe, after all, and salty plankton broth, and some measure of warmth, and no sharks.

Ultimately, of course, i suppose he was relieved to get out of there, but I bet he took some guilty pleasure curling up in a blubber bed or leaning up against a giant rib curved just right to support his aching back.

I am having these thoughts because I violated something I guess is a core belief. I walked into the beast’s mouth on my own. Then I actively, consciously contributed to the good fortunes of our national car wreck in chief by having a drink in the bar of his hotel near the White House. It was a good drink, in fact, but obscenely overpriced. And it is a beautiful lobby, staffed full of people of many colors, from many lands, whose eyes I mostly had a hard time meeting.

Will this experience change and purify me like Jonah’s did him? Only time will tell.

In the eye of the storm

They say it’s eerily calm inside the eye. Even while winds and rain are tearing things apart a few miles away, you get this patch of calm, even sunshine, and some barometric sense of stillness and quiet. And of course foreboding, because you know that calm spot is going somewhere else, and you can’t run fast enough to stay inside.

So it seems to me this week in our nation’s capital. Of course I see what I want/expect to see, and I wouldn’t presume to elevate my anecdotes even to the level of alternative facts. But still… that’s a picture inside the DuPont Circle Starbucks at 7:30 AM on a workday. In my 15 or so years of coming here, I never remember it being empty like this. As they say wherever they say things like this: Sumpin’ ain’t right.

Bye bye Sporty

The best days of The Sportsmen’s Lounge were behind it long before we got to town. So, no huge surprise to see a handwritten sign on the door saying they’re closed. They had some improbable flowers in the tiny dirt strip in the front, and neon signs from brands of beer I won’t drink and teams I don’t care about.

We only made it in one time, even though I was once told by a memorably alcoholic lady at another bar that the Friday seafood lunch was very much worth the trip.

A welcome sight

Driving along the road in Vermont, one of the last things you expect to see is  a sign that reads “tacos.”

Now, this is southern Vermont, so I suppose Sarah Palin could see Mexico from here… but still.

We stopped, and learned that this is the distribution center for the former Tito’s Tacos. It’s “the former” because of a trademark dustup with a Tito’s Tacos in the Los Angeles area… It doesn’t seem like there is much room to confuse the two, but I suppose one has to protect one’s brand.

Now, Vermont Tito is selling tacos for breakfast and burritos for lunch out of a little corner grocery that we had never actually been in before. It’s a cute little store, the tacos were delicious, and we’ll be back. Good Mexican food is definitely something we miss around here, so this will be a welcome treat.

Never eat anything bigger than your head

The Christmas roast Sherry found by working a contact in the restaurant business. The picture doesn’t really do it justice, but after feeding about 15 people to torporous excess AND providing big to-go slabs for those who wanted, there was still a whole bunch left over.

Meat raffle

Had to look this one up, and I definitely didn’t expect what I found out…

It turns out this is a raffle where the prize is… wait for it… some meat!

Beer

It would be wrong not to acknowledge the rich variety of beer available here… I’ve had some really good ones.

Yesterday I stopped in at the Fork and Brewer, where they have 27, yes 27 of their own beers on tap. Later, somewhere else, I had a Behemoth triple chocolate hazelnut milk stout that was really just better than most desserts.

Peak Foliage

Early in the year, I heard some predictions that the drought-like conditions we have experienced would cause a lousy leaf season.

Instead, it has been spectacular. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been daily wondering whether we had hit the peak… it’s a tradeoff between having the most leave is still on the trees, versus having the most leaves at their most dramatic colors. Often, a storm will come along and knock some leaves down early, so if you are waiting and waiting for the most color, you might miss it.

On Thursday, we snuck out for a nice lunch at the Four Columns Inn in Newfane. The Newfane Square is about as picturesque as you can convenient we get, and the colors were amazingly vibrant under the perfect blue sky.
