A welcome sight

Driving along the road in Vermont, one of the last things you expect to see is  a sign that reads “tacos.”

Now, this is southern Vermont, so I suppose Sarah Palin could see Mexico from here… but still.

We stopped, and learned that this is the distribution center for the former Tito’s Tacos. It’s “the former” because of a trademark dustup with a Tito’s Tacos in the Los Angeles area… It doesn’t seem like there is much room to confuse the two, but I suppose one has to protect one’s brand.

Now, Vermont Tito is selling tacos for breakfast and burritos for lunch out of a little corner grocery that we had never actually been in before. It’s a cute little store, the tacos were delicious, and we’ll be back. Good Mexican food is definitely something we miss around here, so this will be a welcome treat.

After

I never posted final pics of our new living room, so here they are, now that we’re all moved in and dressed up for Christmas. So far, we love how it looks and feels. The windows and insulation are keeping us nice and comfy.

Never eat anything bigger than your head

The Christmas roast Sherry found by working a contact in the restaurant business. The picture doesn’t really do it justice, but after feeding about 15 people to torporous excess AND providing big to-go slabs for those who wanted, there was still a whole bunch left over.

Merry Christmas 2016

We had a wonderful Christmas morning at home, with presents and treats for all. The cats are basically drunk with flowers and ribbons and paper everywhere.

Even the birds got a fresh batch of seeds.

The tree gained an octopus and a seal, because why not?

It was a snowy pre-Christmas, and today we’ll have more melting.

We are thinking of friends and family near and far, and how fortunate we are this day. We wish everyone who sees this a merry Christmas and a safe, healthy and happy new year.

High tech deco

Somehow my heart hasn’t been in the activities of Christmas decorating the past few years. I still love the ornaments and the swagged garland and the balsam candle and all of it. But the actual weekend of unpacking and installing makes me suddenly too tired to get off the couch. I’m glad that Lee had the energy and motivation to do all the work!

My new programmable LEDs allowed me to make a big impact with little work… yay! And I get to change them for every holiday!

Five is old enough for cat videos

The blog turned five last month, which went unheralded at the time. But surely that’s a milestone, especially in Internet years, where it’s gotta be like a hundred.

To celebrate, I present my very first actual cat video. It’s not long, but there’s layers and nuance.

If I were terminally ill– which I’m not, but if I were — I think my make-a-wish might be to have Werner Herzog deconstruct this so we could understand it more fully.

Pillars of the community

Wantastiquet Road, constructed 1899, fittingly situated at the base of the mountain.

Somebody had leaned matching walking sticks on them. Perched on one was an old lost glove, and on the other an old lost set of car keys.

Birthday Bash

Chuck and Susan are our bridge buddies (and by ‘bridge’ I mean appetizers and bubbles followed by a few hands of ‘now how do I respond to that bid?’ followed by dinner, more cards, and Ben & Jerry’s right out of the carton) and dear friends.

Here, stone cold sober, and after much rescheduling, we all celebrated their fall birthdays.

PS — not stone cold sober

Mr. Jenks, Tear Down That Wall

Over the past month, progress on the living room ground to a near-standstill. The final subcontractor, doing the picky finish work on the glass blocks, just wouldn’t show up reliably. So, in a moment of frustration we told them to just get as far as they could get last Friday and then pack up and get out.

Now, we have some painting and patching to do ourselves, and some edges won’t be quite as smooth as they could be. But, we have our house back.

This makes 2 out of 2 contractors on this project who suffered from 95% disease… sheesh! You like them, you like their work, but they just can’t quite bring themselves to get ‘er done!
