Full and empty
Last Saturday evening, we went to our third Empty Bowls dinner, held at Landmark College in Putney. It’s a fundraiser for the homeless shelter, and this year as every year, each participant walks away with a handmade ceramic bowl. Dozens, maybe hundreds of local families face hunger each week in our local area. We’ve heard a rumor that the dinner may not go on next year, owing to volunteer burnout.
Certainly local hunger is a result of situations far more complex than lack of available food. The next day, we went to Scott Farm, where they grow more than 70 varieties of heirloom apples. Columbus Day weekend is the “Black Friday” of apple season, and it was busy for sure. We filled a bag with seven or eight different varieties, including the “hidden ruby” and a quince, shown here in still life with one of our bowls. I had to kick somebody out of their sun spot to take that picture.
