Today’s bike ride started and ended at the Brigham Young Memorial in Whitingham. It was a beautiful fall day, and 8 of us had a great ride. Even at my newly increased age, I was still the second youngest.
The route took us along the Deerfield River. We saw people rafting and fly fishing, and we saw a lot of the old power generation and industrial infrastructure that abounds in this part of the world. The highlight of all that was the 4.75 mile Hoosac Tunnel, which has quite a story to tell. There’s a good Wikipedia article, and http://www.hoosactunnel.net has a lot of good stuff. We ditched the bikes and walked a little ways in, but even a little-used railroad tunnel is scary, and it’s hard to walk very far in those shoes anyway.
