Singapore!!

I’m staying at the iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel for a few days, for a trade show visit. It’s developed by a Vegas bazillionaire with whose politics I don’t much agree, and it feels a lot like Vegas. Politics aside, however, they’ve done a jaw-droppingly good job of providing a lot of service and food and drink to a lot of people. They do have unlimited money now, but even so… How do you hire and manage so many people, mostly at a pretty low wage, and have it all work? How do you keep the power from shorting out? How come we don’t get food poisoning from a place that makes sushi by the truckload?

They’ll never fool me into thinking I’m “at home” or “special” in a place with 2,600 rooms, but still, on the superficial level of commercial interaction, the people are incredibly good at what they do.
