Caribbean party at the Carambola beach resort.last night, our hosts made reservations for themselves to go to the weekly Caribbean party at one of the big resorts across the island. They invited us to join, and we did.

After a remarkably bad buffet dinner, we were treated to the Caribbean entertainment. First, we got another round of Kiki and the Fire Gypsies. Apparently there is a relatively small talent pool.

Then, we saw a local folk dance troupe do their thing. They dance the quadrille dressed in 19th-century costumes, made of Madras fabric, which to me is the stuff of short sleeved shirts and particularly ugly 1970s sportcoats. The quadrille is some sort of predecessor to the American square dance, and I think even more closely related to the contra dancers who occasionally invade Brattleboro.

Final act was the best: stilt dancers called “Mocko Jumbies."we had seen images of these guys all over the island, and it was great to see them perform. They come out on stilts which add about 6 feet of height, dance around in impressive colorful costumes, masked and wearing funny hats, and altogether the effect is quite exotic and kind of scary.
